Painting and Decorating is an intimate autobiographical portrait of everyday drudgery and care as the filmmaker strips wallpaper and re-decorates the hallway of her grandmother’s home in suburban Birmingham. In the house three generations of women go about their work, tensions and intimacies in close view. The second part of the film shifts to a free-party in the Scottish wilds some days after the completion of the hallway. The camera documents muddy feet, urinating friends, and steaming bodies in the hot tub at day break. The two acts haze together to dwell on the small pains of home and of leaving it, of making a world your own.
