Having instigated a road-trip through Italy shortly after undergoing heart surgery, Jonah, a work-obsessed medical researcher, wonders if she should have waited before embarking on a journey like this. The middle-class road trip of her design transforms into something much wilder in the hands of her two best friends and ex-lovers, Luke and Matthew. Competing with their lively hedonism, Jude re-discovers the old joys of living freely although her recovery is challenged by the voracious spirit of the holiday. The group of friends bathe in thermal hot springs and listen carefully to the landscape, eating rich food from the forests. Where in the distant past, Luke and Matthew's affections were so comforting to Jude, they now confuse her as she struggles to relax into what ought to be an idyllic situation. The Saturnia Fountain tells a story from the rare perspective of a dispossessed generation who live precariously but joyfully without money, stability, and whose deep friendships replace traditional family connections.
